Each year the number of people with chronic diseases is increasing. Over 25 % of the Dutch people suffer from chronic diseases and 8% of them are suffering from more than one chronic disease. This has an enormous impact on the life of patients and their families. Furthermore, costs of care and absenteism and presenteism do have their impact on the social, economic and environmental status of organisations and of our country.

Within the Netherlands and EU chronic diseases is number 1 responsible for death. They account for 70-80 % of all healthcare costs which is over € 700 billion each year at European level. A study of the World Economic Forum estimated that the cumulative loss of output due to chronic diseases would increase by up to 4 % of the annual GDP by 2030.

The quest for preventive aid among healthy ageing persons is also increasing, 97 % of the costs for chronic diseases is spent on treatment for chronic diseases whilst a mere 3 % is spent on prevention.

Does this make sense whilst most of the chronic diseases are preventable?

We know that following the same road of treatments will not generate tremendous improvements in health and decrease of costs. A different approach is needed for a positive impact on people, organisations and society.
